To be fair, the distance was a great deal shorter back in the day, as the major road that connects Rome to Milan was built in the last century in the same place Milan was built in the 1700s. Also, there was a bridge built over the Ticino River in the 1890s that spanned from Milan to Rome, which is about a mile more.
On the other hand, the two cities were never really the same distance apart. Milan was first founded over 200 years before Rome and was a city of the Italian Alps, a mountainous region in the middle of the Italian peninsula. Rome was founded over 1,000 years before Milan.
