You may have heard or see the word “spanish” used in a different context than what it means. “Spanish” means “language of the Spaniards,” which is a very broad definition. In this case, “spanish” is also used to describe the style of music, movies, and books.
Our last trip to Spain was in 2012, when we checked in to a new apartment with my sister-in-law. We didn’t realize that we were on the very same hotel floor as the original owners, and the original Spanish owners, when we were young, were quite the opposite. It was a very different atmosphere from that of our Spanish hosts. It was a very different atmosphere from the way we had found it, so it was hard to relate to that environment.
I remember the first time I heard the song “Ciudad en un sueño” by Spanish musician Juanes. I was probably eleven or twelve, and it was the first time I had heard a song that I knew I had to learn. I liked the song, but I had no idea what it was about. I liked the music, though. It was a fun song, and I wanted to learn more than I knew.
Jaimie and I are a little younger than most of the other guests on the show, and we have a tendency to listen to music that we think we know. Our musical tastes run to a wide variety of genres, and we have a lot of favorite songs we love in common. When we think of Juanes, we tend to think of his music, and that’s not a bad thing. But there’s no doubt that he has an amazing voice.
We’re not all that well versed in music, but we’ve come to like some of the songs he did, so here’s a little bit of a primer on his voice.
