Madrid is like the capital of Europe, with its wealth of history, architecture, parks, and museums which is almost always on display (and therefore free). The subway system is also pretty large and easy to navigate, so it should be no problem getting from one end to the other.
There are also many other museums, parks, and other attractions in Madrid, making it a fantastic place to visit, but for the most part anything is free.
